Halloween is coming!

Halloween_PAPER CRAFT Mummy Cover

1Story: So, my craft partner “Whitey” has this new tool called a Silhouette Cameo. The Silhouette Cameo is a machine that looks like a printer but what it really is, is a cutting machine. This is a scrapbookers wet dream. It’s a lot like a “Cricket” but it does so much more. It can cut any thin material from paper to lambskin into very cool shapes using vectors.  But, how I feel this lil machine really excels is its very cool feature called “Print and Cut”. Here its the work flow. You create some art or you use some pre-exsisitng artwork and you open it up in the Silhouette Studio app. This app will scan over the art work and then trace it using a high contrast pass. The next step is takes the “trace” and makes vector coordinates and it remembers where they are by leaving a registration mark on the art work. You print out the art work, feed it into the Silhouette and it will cut out the shapes of the trace. In this case we used the “perforated lines” function. I’ve been wanting to do some Paper Crafts and I thought this is the best tool for the job.

Paper Craft for those of you who are not “in the know”,(rolls my own eyes at myself) is the act of creating 3 dimensional characters from 2D artwork. Basically, it’s just a way of trying to be cool while making paper dolls. There, I said it.

Mummy PaperCraft

There are some AMAZING artists, some with big names who are doing this and since I love characters I thought I would give it a try. This one is not my artwork, this was done by one of those amazing artists I was talking about. This cool little mummy was created by Tristan Mitchell over at THEBIGFOOTSTUDIO.COM All rights reserved by him (or her?)

Anyway, I wonder if there is an app that will allow me to take some characters that I make in a 3D program and then unwrap them into some cool Paper Craft…hmmm. If, you know of any, drop me a line and let me know. I hear Pepakura can do it…I’ve seen it used for Paper Craft Cosplay stuff. I’ll give it a check and let y’all know.

Great…now I’m making paper dolls. <smh>

Tools: Silhouette Studio

Closing Thoughts: * I know Pepakura is a PC app, I wonder if that shit or something like that for Mac. If not, I guess I’ll have to use Wineskin to open it up in Mac.

** I wonder if I can cut vinyl stickers with this thing? Hmm…I see more R&D in my future!
